Bon après un examen de conscience, j'ai décidé de retirer les corps de texte des 2 articles de Nature sur la grippe avaire que j'avais mis en ligne, et ce pour des raisons de droit d'auteur (et vis à vis du journal aussi) que vous comprendrez facilement j'imagine.

Voici un nouvel article paru dans Nature aujourd'hui. Il fait suite à celui du 9 Mars 2006 que je vous avais fait partager précédement. Celui-ci confirmerai les soupcons que les scientifiques ont à propos du rôle potentiel des chats dans la diffusion de H5N1.

Mais je vous laisse le soin de vous faire votre propre opinion.

Feline friend or potential foe?

What role do cats play in the epidemiology of H5N1 avian flu virus? We don’t yet have all the answers, but it’s time to consider new precautions, argue Thijs Kuiken, Albert Osterhaus, Peter Roeder and their colleagues.

here are increasing numbers of reports from Asia and Europe of domestic cats dying from avian influenza H5N1 virus. The available evidence, albeit incomplete, suggests that cats are more than collateral damage in avian flu’s deadly global spread and may play a greater role in the epidemiology of the virus than previously thought. Here we recommend that new precautions are taken by nations and agencies fighting avian flu to minimize the risk of cats becoming infected and spreading the highly pathogenic virus to poultry, humans and other species.

But given the potential contribution of these carnivore hosts to both virus transmission and its adaptation to mammals, we believe the time for increased surveillance and precaution is here. ■

Je vous fais partager un article paru dans NATURE ce mois-ci.

Il semblerait presque certain que nos compagnons à poils et amateurs de souris et autres oiseaux, soient l'objet de toutes les attentions des scientifiques travaillant sur le H5N1.

En effet, nos chers minous seraient capables de répliquer le virus et de le transmettre ("domestic cats do die from H5N1 and do transmit it to other cats (T. Kuiken et al. Science 306, 241; 2004)").

Je vous laisse prendre connaissance de l'article par-vous même et vous propose de débattre sur ce sujet et notamment l'angle à aborder pour communiquer sur ce sujet avec les propriétaires de chats.

"Felines are fast becoming a new focus for fears over avian flu, as cats infected with the deadly H5N1 strain are reported in Austria, Germany, Thailand and Indonesia. So could they spread the virus? The World Health Organization (WHO) has played down the danger based on current knowledge, but experts warn that the science is moving rapidly.

The Austrian authorities announced on 6 March that three domestic cats had tested positive for H5N1 in the southern town of Graz, the scene of a recent outbreak in birds. That followed detection of the virus in a dead cat on the northern island of Rügen, Germany, on 28 February, and news that 8 of 111 apparently healthy cats tested close to bird flu outbreaks in central Thailand carried antibodies to the virus (see

Nature 439, 773; 2006).

But scientists may just be learning what is already common knowledge among Indonesian villagers. Peter Roeder, a consultant for the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, says locals have an onomatopoeic name for bird flu “that sounds like ‘plop’, the sound of a chicken hitting the ground when it falls out of a tree. They also have a name for the cat form of avian flu — ‘aaargh plop’ — because cats make a screaming noise before they fall out of the tree.” ■
